Farris, Talma Lou

Devoted Wife, Mother And Grandmother

  • Tuesday, July 19, 2022
Talma Lou Farris, of Soddy Daisy, peacefully passed away on July 15, 2022 at the age of 86.  Talma’s greatest accomplishment was being a devoted wife, mother and grandmother who always put her family first.  She loved the beach, quilting and spending quality time with her family and friends.

Religion, attending church and music were also integral parts of Talma’s life as a devout Christian. From birth, music was a family tradition.  Talma was an avid piano player and singer.  As a lifelong member of Mowbray Presbyterian Church, she acted as the choir director for many years.

Talma, the first female inductee into the Warren Wilson Hall of Fame for basketball, thrived on competition, and also participated in the Senior Olympics.  She traveled across the United States playing AAU basketball for Nashville Business College and Pepsi-Cola.  Even in recent years, she often reminisced of playing youth basketball.

During Talma’s teaching career of 30 years, she received the Hamilton County Teacher of the Year award.  She taught in Jacksonville, Fl. and in the Hamilton County school system at Hillcrest, Harrison and Falling Water Elementary schools.

She will be lovingly remembered by her husband of 58 years, Grant Farris; three sons, Eric (Tina) Farris, Bret (Rachel) Farris and Heath (Keely) Farris; sister, Bea Starnes; brothers, Alvin and Wesley Lewis; and her grandchildren, Emma, Arden, Luke, Sarah, Ian and Lilah; as well as numerous relatives and friends.

Talma was preceded in death by her parents, Lester and Ella Mae Lewis; granddaughter, Mina Farris; brothers, Carlos and Clifford Lewis; and sisters, Villa Burkhart and Cleo Chauncey.

Reverend Tommy Preston will officiate a Celebration of Life Service at Mowbray Presbyterian Church in Soddy Daisy on Saturday, Aug. 6 at 2 p.m. A reception will follow in the Fellowship Hall.
