U.S. Air Force Veteran Was Bronze Star Recipient

James Roy “J.R.” Moates, 93, of Chattanooga, Tennessee, passed away on Friday, March 17, 2023.

Mr. Moates was born in Chattanooga on January 17, 1930, the son of the late William Hubert Moates and Mellie Womack Moates. He proudly served for 20 years in the United States Air Force and was a Bronze Star recipient. After retirement from the Air Force he worked for AT&T as a cable tech. He sang in the choir and served as deacon at Brainerd Hills Baptist Church. Mr. Moates was a car enthusiast.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Moates was preceded in death by his wife, Virginia Moates and his siblings, Mildred Stancel, Gene Moates, Lawrence Moates, Charles Moates, Sr., and Floyd Moates.

Survivors include his sister, Evelyn Peace; eight nieces and nephews, Linda Chumbler (Doug), Rev. Charles Moates (Alice-Ann), Joy Moates, Judy Moates, Cheryl Moates, Kenneth Moates (Anna), Shirley Lincoln, and James Peace (Robin); and several great-nieces and great-nephews.

Graveside and interment services will be on Thursday, March 23, at 2 p.m. at Chattanooga National Cemetery.

Visitation will be on Wednesday from 4-7 p.m. at Heritage Funeral Home, East Brainerd Chapel.

In lieu of flowers, the family respectfully requests memorial contributions be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, Tn. 38105.
