Soddy-Daisy Community Library Announces Summer Reading Program And Celebration

  • Tuesday, May 2, 2023
The Soddy-Daisy Community Library and the KELCURT Foundation, released the SDCL 2023 Summer Reading Recommendations lists on Monday, and announced the Mythical Summer of Reading Program. This program is open to all ages in different categories: pre-k - second, third - fifth, sixth - eighth, ninth - 12th and adult.

Books were chosen for the lists by a panel of librarians, educators, avid readers and book industry professionals.

“Every year it gets more difficult to choose the books for the summer lists, there’s so many great works out there,” said Kelly Flemings, Education & Outreach coordinator for the Soddy-Daisy Community Library and head of the summer reading program.
“Our goal with these lists is to provide a diverse range of entertaining and educational books that keep children - and adults - reading all summer.”

Participants must read a set number of books of their choice, on or above grade/reading level and complete a Summer Reading Journal. Requirements are different for each category. Upon completion, the journals can be turned in to the SDCL between July 17 and Aug. 4. For completing the journal, participants will earn a free Summer of Reading t-shirt. T-shirts will be available for pick up at the library Aug. 19-24.

Journals will be available beginning May 24 on the SDCL Facebook Page and at KELCURTFoundation.org in jpg format, as well as a Google Doc.

This is the fourth year that the SDCL has offered recommendations and a summer reading program. A series of 10 author events ranging from children picture book authors to adult mystery/thriller authors will take place at the SDCL in June and July.

The program will culminate on Saturday, Aug. 19 with the SDCL Summer Celebration. This event is free and open to everyone. You do not have to participate in the Mythical Summer of Reading Program to attend this event. Further details are to be announced.
