Charles Franklin, Sr. was born on October 15, 1947.

He was the son of Glen Franklin and Virginia Tipsy.

Charles received Christ in his youth at the Tabernacle Baptist Church in Chattanooga. He attended Chattanooga Avenue and Howard High School. He was known as “Bookey” in his community and on the southside of Chattanooga. In his free time, he enjoyed spending time with family and friends, playing spades, going to bingo, and watching football games.

Charles fell in love, and was married to the love of his life, Dorothy A. Burse Franklin, for 14 years. From that marriage, there were four children born, Angela M. Franklin, Yvette Franklin, Charles Franklin, Jr., and William G Franklin. He later married Robin Jones Franklin. She had two children Rukiya (Cedric) Thomas and Emmitt Jones.

Charles was employed by Rockwell International as a laborer until he retired in 1975. HIs health began to fail him during the last years of his life. God saw him getting tired. He wrapped him in his loving arms and whispered, “come to me”.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Glen Franklin and Virginia Tipsy, his son, William G. Franklin and his ex-wife, Robin Jones Franklin.

He leaves to cherish his memory to his wife, Cynthia Cal-Franklin; one sister, Gussie Montgomery of Columbia, South Carolina; one brother, Henry (Denise) Franklin, of Los Angeles, California; two daughters, Angela M. Franklin and Yvette Franklin; one son, Charles Franklin, Jr., Rukiya (Cedric) Thomas and Emmitt Jones; sisters-in-law, Patricia K. (Donald) Marks and Lillian Upshaw. A host of grandchildren and great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, great nieces, and great nephews, other relatives and friends. One devoted friend, Dorothy, A. Burse Franklin and Pamela Taylor Erwin; special nurse/daughter, Yolanda (Byrd) Townsend.

Private services were held.
A dinner of celebration will be held at Mary Walker Towers at 2 p.m. on Sunday, June 4.
