Funding Lining Up For Large Inclusive Playground At Jack Benson Heritage Park

  • Wednesday, October 9, 2024

Officials said funding is being secured for a large inclusive playground planned at Jack Benson Heritage Park in East Brainerd.

The playground will include 16,000 square feet of play area with the needs of children with physical and cognitive handicaps at the forefront.

The initial cost was estimated at $1.2 million, but the final tally will be over $2 million.

County government is being asked to supply $800,000 toward the project, and a number of County Commission members said they will support the request.

Sabrina Smedley, former County Commission member, said, even with the county's large contribution, there is still a shortfall of about $260,000, which includes $100,000 as a contingency and for maintenance.

She said fundraising efforts are underway to obtain the final needed funds, including the sale of commemorative bricks and a bail out of jail fundraiser.

Bobby Dann said the Downtown Kiwanis Club began discussing the project in 2016 and has been working at it off and on ever since.

He said one piece of the playground has to come from Australia.

Officials said the locally based PlayCore is proving a $400,000 discount on its portion of the project.

Scott Martin, city parks director, said out of all the parks in the city and county only three are designed to be inclusive.

It is hoped the playground will be erected by next spring.
