Martha Jean Powell Coon
Martha Jean Powell Coon, 89, of Cohutta, Georgia, passed away peacefully on November 6, 2024, surrounded by her family.
A beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, Marty will always be remembered for her kindness and genuine caring for all beings in need.
Born on September 13,1935, in Florala, Alabama, Marty was the second of seven children. She attended Southern University where she met Glenn, the love of her life. A lifelong nurse, Marty’s was a life of service to others. She had an open door, open arm policy. She was a fabulous cook and a consummate hostess so there was never any question as to where people wanted to go for holidays and family celebrations. Her home and table were constantly full of family and friends.
Marty’s marriage to Glenn was a true love affair. They celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary this past April. Music was a big part of their life together. Glenn plays several instruments, but primarily piano, and Marty’s claim to fame was her clear soprano voice. Their combined love of music was appreciated by all that heard them perform together.
Marty and Glenn helped establish the Cohutta Seventh-Day Adventist Church where they were lifelong members. In addition to providing music for special occasions at church, Marty was also instrumental in starting the children’s choir. She loved getting other people, particularly children, interested in music.
Marty loved beauty and was able to find it everywhere – a song, a flower, a verse, a sunset…
She was preceded in death by her parents, Allen Euzema and Maurine Simpler Powell; two sisters, Jan Grigsby and Renie Fisher; and two brothers, Roland Powell and Foy Powell. She is survived and missed by her loving husband, Glenn Adelbert Coon, Jr.; two daughters, Rena (Roger) Coon and Marti Janene (Jack) Hatcher; two sons, Glenn Adelbert (Lori) Coon III and Lawrence Allen (Sarah) Coon; brother George Powell and sister Lena Powell; 13 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; more friends and neighbors than can be counted; and an army of healthcare workers that provided her with amazing care.
A celebration of life service will be held on Saturday, Nov. 16, at 2:30 p.m. at the Cohutta SDA Church, 5027 Mt. Olivet Road, Cohutta, Ga.
