As I have both watched and read the news this week, I couldn't help but wonder what is going on with the Hamilton County Commission. Each commissioner is elected by his/her district, but to represent all of Hamilton County. The commissioners are calling for transparency, so I join them in seeking transparency. This is not the first time I have raised this issue, but the current group of commissioners just make it so necessary.
The present County Attorney, Rheubin Taylor is a fine man and a class act. For decades now, he has served our county in this capacity. Mr. Taylor is 76 years old and has a law practice, as well as the income he will receive in retirement from the county. He has earned it. The chancellor ruled that Mr. Taylor could continue in his position through June of 2025. That's not all that far away.
It makes sense to me that our County Mayor, Weston Wamp, would get out ahead of Mr. Taylor's retirement. That's just prudent, as well for straightforward and transparent. The entirety of Hamilton County votes for our county mayor, and County Mayor Wamp was the overwhelming choice. His choice for county attorney is Janie Parks Varnell, an attorney with a stellar reputation and a vast knowledge of the law. He has introduced her to the Commission so they could vet her, six months in advance of the position being open. That's truly transparency.
Therefore, please answer the questions I've asked serval times, in this publication as well as via other social media. Do you think your district constituents are impressed with your in-fighting, as well as pushback against the county mayor we elected? Do you believe it will elevate your political career, should you want to run for the mayor of Chattanooga or the mayor of Hamilton County. This is not a hard question to answer. We the people are going to remember your answer, even if you choose to remain silent.
Janie Varnell has the endorsement of several important groups. She is more than qualified. I would love to see our commissioners rise about any pettiness or grandstanding and pull in the same direction, for at least once. Differing opinions are good in some instances, particularly where your district would have a different outcome. But that's not the case here. Please get this done and let's move on to the next real issue.
