State Senator Paul Bailey and Representative Johnny Garrett have introduced legislation aimed at giving hospitals more flexibility in hiring certain specialized physicians. The proposed measure, Senate Bill 9, would allow Tennessee hospitals to directly employ radiologists, emergency room doctors, anesthesiologists and pathologists. Under current regulations, hospitals must hire these specialized physicians through third-party corporations, a process that can sometimes create obstacles for hospitals.
“For the past several years, the General Assembly has done remarkable work to expand freedoms for employers and create more opportunities for employees,” said Senator Bailey.
This legislation is another important step in that ongoing process. It will empower hospitals with more options to address their specific needs.”
Senator Bailey also emphasized the benefits this change could bring to rural hospitals, which often face unique challenges in staffing and operations.
“For rural hospitals especially, the ability to directly hire specialized doctors could mean improved patient care and greater operational stability,” added Senator Bailey. “It’s a commonsense solution that supports our healthcare providers and ensures they have the tools to succeed.”
The proposed bill is permissive, meaning it does not mandate direct employment but simply provides hospitals with the choice.
“This important legislation will enhance the process hospitals use in hiring quality doctors who are committed to caring for Tennesseans,” said Rep. Garrett. “Not only does this boost operational efficiency, but it will result in better health outcomes and access for patients across the Volunteer State. Health care providers are essential to the safety of every community, and I’m committed to reducing burdensome regulations while making available the tools and processes necessary to save lives.”
