U.S. Navy Veteran Had A Generous Heart And Loved Traveling

Jerry Franklin Shuford, 81, of Dunwoody, Georgia, passed away on Saturday, February 17, 2024, after a long battle with Alzheimer’s.

He was a gifted athlete lettering in baseball, basketball and football at Central High School in Chattanooga. Jerry was a member of the state championship baseball team his freshman year and was voted as Mr. Central his senior year. In 2019, he was inducted into the Central High School Sports Hall of Fame. Jerry graduated from Vanderbilt University, where he attended on a football scholarship. After graduating from Vanderbilt, he served in the U.S. Navy as a lieutenant on the USS Benjamin Stoddert during the Vietnam War.

Jerry worked for Lever Brothers, where he retired as the southern regional sales manager. He enjoyed playing golf and cards at the Dunwoody Country Club, where he was a member of the Club Champion Golf Team one year. Jerry attended St. Patrick’s Episcopal Church in Dunwoody and was active with their Youth Program. He had a generous heart and gave to many veteran charities. Jerry enjoyed traveling, he loved to laugh and never met a stranger. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends.

He was preceded in death by his brother, George L. Shuford.

Survivors include his wife, Janice Rogers Shuford; daughter, Kelly Elizabeth Shuford; brothers, David (Paula) Shuford and Mike Shuford; numerous nieces and nephews.

There will be no visitation at the funeral home.

A graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 26, at the Chattanooga National Cemetery with the U.S. Navy providing military honors.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to the Alzheimer’s Association.
