Chattanooga Girls Leadership Academy kicked off Black History Month festivities with the Black History Movie Night on Feb. 15 from 5-7 p.m. "It was an evening of entertainment and reflection for all," organizers said.
From February 20-23, CGLA hosted a Spirit Week with themed dress-up days.
On February 23, Black History Movie Night was held from 5-7 p.m. There were a variety of films to choose from - Akeelah and the Bee, Princess and the Frog, Hidden Figures, Remember the Titans, 42 and Wakanda Forever.
There was a Banner Decorating Contest, providing an opportunity for participants to express their Black History perspective through banners or images.
The top five winners, chosen by the committee, will be showcased at the final Black History Month event.
The grand finale of the celebrations will take place tonight from 4:30-7 p.m. with the Black History Month Celebration, featuring a live DJ, food samples, a fashion show, trivia and an art walk. "This event aims to recognize small, black-owned businesses around Chattanooga and celebrate the community's vibrant cultural heritage," organizers said.
Dr. Elaine Swafford, CEO of CGLA, said, "Our students should feel pride in who they are, connect to history and also have the opportunity to be connected to different cultural celebrations. Black History Month is an opportunity to do this, while also bringing the community together."
