It is with both heavy hearts and fond smiles that we announce the passing of Gene Smith (Da), a beloved father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend, who departed this world on July 17, at the age of 85.

A lifelong fan of the Tennessee Volunteers and an unrivaled champion of good-natured mischief, Gene leaves behind a legacy of love, laughter, and endless pranks.

A man of strong Christian faith, Gene was dedicated to his family, his country and his Lord. Originally from Ringgold, Georgia, Gene grew up in Chattanooga. After graduating from Central High School, he served our great country in the Air National Guard, and retired from Wheland Foundry. His life was a testament to his beliefs, and he lived each day with compassion, grace, integrity and a hearty dose of humor. He found joy in his family, strength in his faith, and happiness in the little moments of mischief that kept everyone on their toes.

Gene was preceded in death by his parents, Charlie and Mamie Smith, his brother, Howard Smith and his sisters, Francis (Harold) Edgemon, Joyce (Jack) Beavers, Kathleen (Nelson) Bowman, and Deana (Lake) Jones and numerous nieces and nephews.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 64 years, Faye, his daughters, Rhonda (Jeff) Hinkle and Gina (Jeff) Greeson, his grandchildren, Tanner (Taylor) Wright, Gavin Greeson, Garrett (Cora) Hinkle and great-grandchildren, Harper and Oliver Wright. His family and friends will forever cherish the warmth of his laughter and the sparkle of his playful spirit.

A visitation for Gene will be held on July 20, from 12-2 p.m. at Chattanooga Funeral Home North Chapel, where we will gather to share stories, enjoy a hearty laugh, and perhaps play a prank or two in his honor and will be followed by a funeral service at 2 p.m.

Rest in peace, Da. We will miss you dearly and take comfort in knowing you are with our Lord in Heaven and laughing with your brother and sisters.
