Joe M. Wiley of Chattanooga died at his home on June 21, 2024 at the age of 94.
Originally from Austin, Texas, Joe graduated from the University of Texas with degrees in Economics and Math, while also lettering in swimming and diving. He then went on to serve as a sergeant in the United States Air Force. In 1977, he moved to Chattanooga to work for TVA and retired in 1990.
Joe (a.k.a. Papa Joe or PJ) was an avid reader and lifelong learner whose love of tinkering and gadgets earned him the nickname “Mr. Joe Fix It”. His desire to learn went hand in hand with his sense of adventure. He and his wife, Charlene, spent their retirement exploring the United States in their travel trailer. Joe also enjoyed sailing and spending time on Chickamauga Lake. They owned a lake property where the family spent many weekends and made countless fond memories.
Joe is survived by his wife of 41 years, Charlene Wiley; his daughter, Carole Wiley (Tina Morton); and his grandchildren Cash and Elizabeth; stepchildren Gail Catron, Jeff Davis (Sandy), Carol Taylor, Leigh Ann Coleman (Tim), and Amy Lamsey (Daniel); eight step-grandchildren and nine step-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Helen and their son, Mark.
The family would like to thank Karen Holomon for her help and loving care of Joe during his extended illness.
A private ceremony will be held on July 12, at 1 p.m. at the Chattanooga National Cemetery.
