Rose Mary Killeffer Dunbar, born on August 28, 1936, in Memphis, Tennessee, peacefully passed away on August 9, 2024, leaving behind a legacy of love, music, and devotion that will be cherished by all who knew her.
Rose Mary graduated from Girls Preparatory School in 1953, and continued her education at the University of Tennessee at Knoxville, graduating in 1957. During her time at UT, she was a proud member of Chi Omega Fraternity, and continued to volunteer at the UTC chapter as an alumna for many years, sharing her wisdom and fostering sisterhood.
After enrolling in a master’s program at the University of Tennessee, she met the love of her life, James Franklin Dunbar (Jim), whom she married on June 20, 1959. Their 65-year union was a testament to enduring love, and was filled with joy, laughter, and a shared commitment to family.
Rose Mary’s life was marked by her generosity, warmth, and an innate ability to make everyone feel special. She had a successful 20-year career with Crye-Leike Realty, where she was known for the personal attention she gave her clients, helping many find their dream homes.
A passionate singer, she found great joy in being part of various singing groups. She was an active member of Signal Mountain Glee Club, St. Timothy’s Episcopal Church choir, and Signal Crest Methodist Church choir, where her beautiful voice and spirit enriched the lives of many. Rose Mary also enjoyed playing tennis and bridge, and traveling with her children and grandchildren on many fabulous vacations.
She is survived by her beloved husband, Jim; her three children, Missy Weiner (Alan) of Tampa, Florida, Cowen Harter (Biff) of Dunwoody, Georgia, and Jock Dunbar (Megan) of Mandeville, Louisiana; and her six treasured grandchildren, James, Cate (Tim), Rebecca, Robert, Piper, and Taylor. In 2008, the family embraced Desta Bume, from Ethiopia, as a family member, and has also grown to love his wife, Salem, and their children Daniel and Ashilé. Rose Mary’s legacy of love, kindness, and dedication to family will live on in their hearts forever.
The family wishes to thank the nurses and staff on Alexian’s rehab floor and the nurses with Hearth Hospice for the care they showed to Rose Mary for the past year. The family requests no flowers. Instead, if you wish, remember Rose Mary with a donation to the charity of your choosing. A memorial service will be held at St. Timothy’s Episcopal Church on Signal Mountain, TN, on Saturday, August 17, at 4:00pm. The family will host a reception in the church parish hall after the service.
