Covenant Soccer Wins Conference Opener At LaGrange

  • Monday, September 30, 2024

The Covenant College men's soccer team had to wait two more days to begin conference play as a result of Hurricane Helene. The Scots defense remained sharp and stood tall as they took down LaGrange 1-0 on the road.

Covenant goalkeeper and defending CCS Defensive Player of the Week, Eli Honeycutt,  was called into action early as he made four saves in the first 21 minutes.

In the 34th minute, the Panthers nearly took the lead as Lucas Duke's shot rattled off the crossbar. In the final 10 minutes of the half, Tyler Johnson, Jonathan Welsh, and Daniel Wallis all forced a save from the LaGrange goalkeeper.

At the half, LaGrange had a higher shot count at 7-4.

In the 59th minute, it was Covenant's turn to just miss the opening goal as William Campbell blasted a shot off the crossbar.  Whitt Tisdale scored the winning goal in the 67th minute as he put the ball in the back of the net after a great pass from Henry Parker on the left side.  Honeycutt made his final save of the night in the 85th minute. In the final three minutes, LaGrange had two corner kicks, but Covenant's defense didn't allow the home team to get off a shot on either set piece.

Covenant moves to 18-1-0 all-time against LaGrange. The win is Covenant's third in a row, all of which were 1-0 results.  LaGrange had 15 shots while Covenant had 14, but the Scots had a higher shots on goal count at 9-7. Honeycutt tied his career-high in saves with seven. The foul count was 5-4 LaGrange.

The Scots are back in action on Wednesday at 5 p.m. for a home battle with Berea.
