Lee Hoops Teams Win Over Delta State

Strong defense from the Lee University men’s basketball team led to a 82-64 win over Delta State University on Sunday afternoon. The Flames held the Statesmen to their lowest scoring total of the season and led wire-to-wire in their second Gulf South Conference win of the season.
 
Sophomore Tylon Chatman once again paced the Flames as he had career highs in points, assists, and rebounds. Chatman had 16 points on 5-of-7 shooting while also going 4-for-5 from the free throw line. He led the Flames with six rebounds and six assists with only one turnover in the win.
 
Lee scored the first four points of the game and never looked back. Early in the first half, the Flames went on a 12-0 run over 4:42 to make it a 19-4 game. After DSU snapped the skid, Lee continued to apply pressure and pushed it out to 23-7. The Flames never let DSU get closer than eight points the rest of the first period and led 43-32 at the break.
 
Tariq Daughton and Noah Boler-Kyle came out strong for Lee in the second half and used an 11-2 run to start the second half to make it a 54-35 lead. DSU did not recover from that and never got it closer than 15 points the rest of the game. The lead ballooned out to as many as 20 points before Lee got the 18-point win.
 
Eight players scored for the Flames with four in double figures. Chatman had 16 points to lead the way while Boler-Kyle had 15. Daughton added 13 points and Willie Walton had 11.
 
The Flames had a season high 21 free throws made of 29 attempts. They held the Statesmen to just 36% shooting in the contest. DSU had two players score43 of their 64 points. Keithean Brooks ahd 21 while Jesse Washington had 22.
 
Lee will head to West Tennessee next week for two games. They will take on Union University on Thursday, January 16 and Christian Brothers University on Saturday, January 18.

LEE WOMEN 71 DELTA STATE 41 Defense was the name of the game in the Lee University women’s 71-41 victory over Delta State University on Sunday afternoon inside Walker Arena. The Lady Flames held the visitors to only seven field goals the entire contest and drew praise from Coach Marty Rowe for their effort. The win moves Lee’s record to 12-3 overall and 6-3 in GSC play. The Lady Statesmen fell to 9-7 and 5-5.

The Lady Flames did not give up a field goal to Delta State the entire first quarter and led 16-2 at the first stop. The defense continued to control the action in the second quarter and the frame ended with Lee leading 34-12. The Lady Flames surrendered just one field goal in the first 20 minutes of action. Ten of Delta State’s points came from the free-throw line.

It was more of the same in the second half. The Lady Statesmen finished with a 23% shooting percentage from the field, making 7-of-31 attempts. They did cash in at the free-throw stripe marching to the line 31 times and converting 25. Delta State attempted 14 triples and sank two. The Lee defense forced the Lady Statesmen into 26 turnovers and scored 26 points off the floor mistakes.

On the other hand, it was a solid team performance by the Lady Flames. Mallory Hampton tallied 21 points and added four rebounds to go along with three assists. No other Lee player was in double-figure scoring, but Haylee Johnson totaled eight points, added six rebounds and dished off four assists. Mia Hurst connected on a pair of 3-pointers and also pitched in with eight points. Haley Cameron came off the bench to pull down five rebounds while 

Mia Alexander nailed a pair of triples and a free throw for seven points. Every Lee player entered the action and nine put points on the board.

The Lady Flames outscored the visitors 22-10 in points in the paint and 28-13 in points off the bench. They shot 43% overall (22-of-51) and made 10-of-28 shots from beyond the arc (36%). Lee went to the free-throw line 21 times and canned 17.

Lee will face its biggest challenge of the season when it travels to Jackson, Tenn. on Thursday and faces an old rival in Union University that is on top of the GSC standings with a 9-0 record. The Lady Bulldogs are 14-2 overall. After moving onto Memphis for a Saturday date with Christian Brothers, Lee will return home and host Auburn Montgomery on Thursday, Jan. 23.
