The match up between the Chiefs and the Eagles on Sunday wasn't much at all. It turned out to be one of the worst whippings in recent memory as Philadelphia dominated every single stat the game had to offer in a 40-22 win over Kansas City....a win that kept the Chiefs from winning a record third straight Super Bowl Crown. Since the game was really a dud, it became apparent early on that some of the " prop bets "were every bit as profitable as betting on the winning team. For instance, you could bet on each team being forced to punt on their first possession which you would have won if you posted that bet.
You could also have bet on how many times Patrick Mahomes would be sacked in the game and if you chose six times you would have won some money.
Folks also bet on the color Gatorade the winning coach would be doused with at the end of the game. In case you were wondering it was green. Things have changed greatly in the past few years in terms of betting on Super Bowls. I remember Super Bowl III when Joe Namath and his New York Jets shocked the football world to its core when they upset the heavily favored Baltimore Colts. Back then sports gambling was illegal everywhere except Las Vegas and the only thing you could bet on was the winner and score of the game. I bet $50, which I didn't really have on the Colts to beat the Jets and I lost. Since then I have never bet on a pro football game. I have only bet on a few college games and lost most of those. Betting has never been my cup of tea.
Maybe I should bet on some of those " prop bets " like...how many times would we see shots of Taylor Swift at the game. I could have also voted on the over-under for the game, which is the final point total for both teams. For the game this year the over-under was 48.5 so if you chose the under you would have lost your bet because the two teams combined for 62 points. You could also have chosen to bet on things like how many turnovers would the two teams commit or if any passes would be returned for a touchdown, which there was in the first half as rookie Cooper DeJean picked off a Mahomes pass and took it to the house.
I've asked people before what is the big thrill about betting on games and they always tell me it's the thrilling ride between risk and reward. Gambling is not supposed to be a source of income....it's entertainment. And since I've never really experienced the high or rush associated with winning a big bet, it's not entertaining to me at all. Now winning the lottery may actually be easier to do.
