Walker Rocks Park Design
Walker County Government unveiled an updated design today for a playground expansion at Walker Rocks Park on the county’s Civic Center Campus. Walker County received a Land and Water Conservation Fund (LWCF) grant from the U.S. Department of the Interior-National Park Service (NPS) to help complete the third phase of the park makeover.
The new layout retains two primary components from the original concept for the playground expansion and incorporates additional inclusive elements. Some of the new highlights include a communication board, sensory station and sensory summit roundabout, which provides a unique climbing experience for children of all abilities. The climber features a wide basin with defined grips to allow children with limited use of their legs to participate in a climbing activity.
“While working to complete the first two phases of the park, we asked for feedback from the community on the preliminary design for the next phase,” said Sarah Kruger, campus director. “Swings and a zip track remained a popular request, along with more ground level play features. This latest design provides a good variety of attractions that will enhance our National Demonstration Site® for inclusive play.”
Public input is also being requested on the selection of play sensors for the sensory station and sensory summit. “We invite the community to let us know their top choices,” said Joe Legge, communications and community development director. “There are several visual, auditory, tactile and adaptive switch options available to create a balanced sensory experience.”
A voting tab featuring pictures and a brief description of each sensor’s function can be found in the parks section of the county website (walkercountyga.gov/parks).
Construction on the playground expansion, as well as the addition of new pickleball courts at Walker Rocks Park, is targeted for completion before the end of the year.
