Lucy Elliot Hill McLain
Lucy Elliot Hill McLain, passed away on Monday, March 10, at her home surrounded by her family.
Lucy grew up in the Brainerd area and attended Brainerd United Methodist. She attended Sunnyside Elementary and graduated from Chattanooga High School and Middle Tennessee State University where she received her BS, Education.
Lucy cherished every moment spent with family and friends, especially family vacations and cruises with her husband. Her passion for educating children and her fighting spirit will be forever remembered. Throughout her journey with cancer, Lucy displayed incredible courage and unwavering hope. Her perseverance served as a role model for everyone around her.
She was preceded in death by her parents: David Lipscomb Hill, Lucy Marshall Hill.
Lucy is survived by her husband, David Lakey McLain; children: Kristen McLain Jenkins, Lori McLain Collins (Chris), and David Phillip “Lake” McLain (Jessica); grandchildren: Luke Bennett McLain, Hayden Kale McLain, Carter James Collins, Cooper Grey Jenkins, and Christopher Ryan Champigny; brother: David Lipscomb Hill (deceased); Sister: Jane Southerland; nieces, Beth Southerland Rice, and Elaine Ogden (Jonathan); grand nieces and nephews, Mark Southerland, Stephen Rice, Matthew Rice (deceased), Emma Ogden, and Harrison Ogden
Lucy taught at Eastdale Elementary after college and after marriage taught in the Cleveland school system. They moved to Bethlehem, NC and returned to Hixson where she started teaching in Hamilton County. She taught at Big Ridge Elementary, Falling Water Elementary and Daisy Elementary, and was named 1988 Teacher of the Year.
Lucy joined Hixson United Methodist Church on March 17, 1974, where she taught Children’s Sunday School, Member of Joe Prince Sunday School Class, active in Women’s Bible Study, Bridge Club, the Book Club and Volunteered with Fuel for Schools
Thank you to the staff of Tennessee Oncology, Dr. Daniel and Marcie Beasley, Hearth Hospice, especially Daniel Capshaw, and Haylee Webber, Madison Vandergriff and Ana Walling.
Pallbearers will be Christopher Champigny, Cooper Jenkins, Carter Collins, Hayden McLain, Luke McLain, Harrison Ogden.
Memorials may be given to Hixson United Methodist Church Youth Choir or St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
The family will receive friends from 4-7 p.m. on Thursday, March 13, at the North Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home.
A Celebration of Lucy’s life will be held at 2 p.m. on Friday, at Hixson United Methodist Church, 5301 Old Hixson Pike, Hixson, Tn. 37343 with Bishop David Graves and Dr. Chuck Starks officiating.
Burial will follow in Hamilton Memorial Gardens.
