Jimmie Smith
Jimmie Coker Smith, 84, of Hixson passed away peacefully on March 14, 2025.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Otis Smith; a daughter, Tammy Smith; and 12 siblings.
She is survived by three children: Todd Smith (Jennifer) of Hixson, Angela Lewis (Jerry) of Hot Springs, Ar., and Tyler Smith of Rock Spring, Georgia; eight grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.
Jimmie was the youngest daughter of Joseph and Nova Coker, sharecroppers in Sandrock, Al., who named her after the country doctor who delivered her one June evening in 1940.
As one of 13 children, Jimmie began working in the fields and picking cotton at just five years old, developing an exceptional work ethic that served her well over eight decades.
As a young woman, Jimmie moved to Chattanooga where she began a nearly 30-year career at Dupont and met her husband of nearly 50 years, Otis Smith.
An avid gardener, Jimmie left the world a more beautiful place than she found it. With her green thumb, she grew dazzling blooms and cultivated immaculate garden beds.
However, Jimmie displayed her immense love for her family with cooking. Mouth-watering chicken and decadent desserts were regular menu items, and her grandchildren cherish memories of gathering in her home for family dinners.
Jimmie Smith was a great many things to many people; however, her greatest titles were “Mom” and “Granny.” She loved her family well and they eagerly anticipate the day they will see her again.
The family will hold a graveside service at Hamilton Memorial Gardens on Tuesday, March 18, at 11 a.m.
