Brekus To Speak At Southern Adventist University For McArthur Lecture Series

The History and Political Studies Department at Southern Adventist University welcomes historian Catherine Brekus, PhD, to present “Christianity and the American Revolution” on Thursday, April 3, at 7 p.m. in Lynn Wood Hall Chapel on campus as part of the Benjamin McArthur Endowed Lecture Series.

Dr. Brekus will explore the religious ideas that fueled the revolt against Great Britain and the rise of the new United States. She is the Charles Warren professor of the History of Religion in America and chair of the Committee on the Study of Religion at Harvard University in Massachusetts. She graduated from Harvard University with a BA in the history and literature of England and America, and she holds a PhD in American Studies from Yale University in Connecticut. Dr. Brekus’ research focuses on the relationship between religion and American culture, with particular emphasis on the history of women, gender, Christianity, and the evangelical movement. She is currently writing a book about the relationship between American nationalism and Christianity.
