Barbara “Bobbie Jean” Hayes
Barbara “Bobbie Jean” Hayes, 77, of Chattanooga, Tennessee, passed away peacefully on the morning of April 29, 2025, at Standifer Place after a lengthy illness.
Born on December 22, 1947, in Chattanooga, Barbara was the daughter of Charles Evans and Flossie James, both of whom preceded her in death. She was also preceded in death by her beloved husband, Robert Hayes; her stepdaughter, Dorethea Hardin Gaines; grandsons Terrell Jenkins and Lawrence Anders III; and a set of twins.
A graduate of Riverside High School’s Class of 1965, Barbara continued her studies at McKenzie College, where she completed her training as a professional secretarial student. Her dedication to her craft earned her a $600 scholarship from the National Secretaries Association, and she became an active member of both the Future Secretaries of America and the Journalism Club.
Barbara devoted 34 years of service to Hertz Rental Car before retiring. She was known for her love of fishing, her passion for reading, and her appreciation for fine fragrances. A faithful member and Mother of Citadel of Faith Church, Barbara cherished gospel music and sang with several choirs, including Totally Committed, The Millsaps Singers, and her former church choir at Pure Holiness Church of God.
She is survived by her daughter, Madeana Evans; grandson, Anthony Boston; special cousins and caregivers, Mary Coln and Rhonda Jones; best friend, Laura Bostick; son-in-law, Lawrence Anders; more than a dozen bonus children; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Barbara Hayes will be remembered for her warmth, her devotion to family and faith, and the joy she brought to all who knew her.
Public viewing will begin at 2 p.m. until 6 p.m. on Friday, May 16, at the funeral home.
A celebration of Barbara's remarkable life will be held at 3 p.m. on Saturday, May 17, in the chapel of John P. Franklin Funeral Home, 1101 Dodds Ave., Chattanooga, 423 622-9995.
