Carl Lansden
On June 20, 2025, we lost Carl Lansden of Cleveland, Tennessee.
Carl was born in the coal mining county of Harlan, Eastern Kentucky, and was the second youngest of eight children, all of whom have predeceased him. His father passed away in a coal mining accident while his mother was carrying his baby sister, Helen. This tragic event may have played a role in shaping his path as a future labor leader.
Over 60 years ago, Miss Barbara Ammons of Knoxville married Carl. Together, they welcomed a son into the world, Carl Hugh Lansden of Knoxville, Tn. Throughout his 91 years, Carl was a true mentor and friend to literally thousands of folks. His career with the IBEW (International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers) gave him a platform to improve the lives of countless workers. He served as the 10th District International vice president of the IBEW. Carl’s quick wit and deep commitment to improving member safety and benefits allowed him to make a meaningful difference in the economic well-being of thousands of members. He was also a U.S. Navy Korean War veteran and a longtime member of the Masonic Order of the Blue Lodge in Morristown, Tn.
