Luther Mayfield
Luther Herman "Buck" Mayfield, Jr., lovingly known as "Buck," passed away peacefully on August 1, 2025, in Chattanooga, Tennessee, at the age of 79.
A resident of Hixson, Buck shared his life with his devoted wife of 35 years, Kaaren Mayfield. Born on January 13, 1946, in Sparta, Tn., Buck faced a difficult start in life. After losing his mother, Edith Pearl, to tuberculosis when he was only six months old, he was raised by his grandmother. Despite a hard upbringing, Buck’s life was defined by resilience, strength, and a deep commitment to God and others.
He was also preceded in death by his father, Luther Herman Mayfield Sr., his sisters Alta, Norma Faye, and Willa Dean, and his son Michael and stepson Jon.
Buck worked for many years as a laborer at Vulcan Materials company. One of his proudest accomplishments was helping build the quarry in Crystal Lake, Il. - now a beautiful and popular place to swim and gather. He took great pride in the work he did.
Buck is survived by his wife, Kaaren, and his sons Karl (Renee), Kurtis (Karen), and Kris (Joann). He was also a stepfather to Sue (Tony) and Kim. Buck also had many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and nieces whom he loved deeply and who brought him great pride and joy.
A sober member of Alcoholics Anonymous for 44 years, Buck credited the program with helping him through some of his hardest times. In return, he spent many years guiding and supporting others on their own paths to recovery, offering compassion, honesty, and a listening ear.
Buck will be remembered for his tough spirit, his big heart, and his unwavering willingness to help others. He touched many lives and will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
A memorial service will be held on August 15, 2025, at 2:30p.m. at Fraser’s Chapel Church, 5930 Big Bottom Rd, Sparta, Tn. 38583.
