Volunteer At Moccasin Bend Mental Health Institute

Martha Bachman McCoy died at her home Monday, May 31, 2004.

She was born Oct. 4, 1904 and was a native Chattanoogan. Her father was Sen. Nathan Bachman and her grandfather was Dr. Jonathan Bachman, longtime minister at First Presbyterian Church.

A lifelong member of First Presbyterian Church, she received her early education at Mrs. McIntyres and graduates from the Girls Preparatory School and Sweetbriar College.

An active leader in the community, Mrs. McCoy served on the boards of Little Miss Mag Day Nursery, the Girls Preparatory School, the Red Cross and Family Service Agency. For many years she was a dedicated volunteer at the Moccasin Bend Mental Health Institute.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas A. McCoy.

She is survived by her daughter, Saly McCoy Garland, and her son-in-law, John Vaughan Garland; three grandsons, John Vaughan Garland Jr., Thomas Jerome Garland and Elliot Shanklin Garland, and dear friend, Neavon Hatfield.

The family will receive friends Sunday at 10 a.m. at the Wann Funeral Home. Services will be at 11 a.m. at graveside at Forest Hills Cemetery with the Rev. Jonathan Bachman Coffey Jr. officiating.

The family asks that in lieu of flowers contributions may be made to the Waldens Ridge Emergency Services, the Inner City Ministries Roanoke Center, 1800 Roanoke Ave., or to a favorite charity.

Arrangements are by Wann Funeral Home.
