The Atlanta Braves announced Sunday that they have signed Bobby Cox to a one-year contract extension through the 2007 season.
"We are extremely pleased to extend Bobby's contract through 2007," Braves Executive Vice President and General Manager John Schuerholz said at the Braves' spring training home. "We feel that Bobby is the best manager in the game and his leadership has helped the Braves to set a very high standard of excellence -- not just in Major League Baseball, but in all of professional sports."
Cox is entering his 25th season as a big-league manager and his 21st year at the Braves' helm. He enters the 2006 season with 2,092 career wins, placing him seventh on the all-time victory list and second among active managers. He and Joe McCarthy are the only two managers in history to post six 100-win campaigns.
Cox has guided Atlanta to Major League Baseball's best overall record since 1991 (1,431-931).
Schuerholz and Cox have worked together since October 1990, when Schuerholz was hired as General Manager and Cox moved from the GM post back to the dugout. With Schuerholz also signed through the 2007 season, the continuity of one of the top GM/Manager tandems in baseball history will continue at least two more seasons.
General Manager John Schuerholz and Bobby Cox both have contracts signed through the 2007 season.
