Another new Mexican restaurant has opened in Chattanooga. The area may be getting over saturated, but we do like Mexican. This one is El Molcajete Sinaloense (can you even pronounce that?) located at 4509 Hixson Pike. It’s “sort of” across from Golden Corral.

The menu is fairly small, but has some nice selections. The house-made salsa was a bit spicier than most, but Wayne wanted to try the two that were hotter. One appeared to be a similar tomato-based salsa and he really liked it, while the other was a guacamole-type. Since he doesn’t care for guacamole, I ate that with my chips. By the time my food arrived, my mouth was on fire!

Appetizers include a cheese dip, bean dip, and Queso fundido (in addition to the guacamole dip). Under salads you will find Grilled Chicken, House, Carne Asada, and Grilled Shrimp (priced from $3.99 to $8.99). Of course there are several offerings of nachos. The lunch menu is served from 10:00 AM until 3:00 PM, and consists of five specials priced from $5.29 to $7.29.

Tacos at El Molcajete Sinaloense are of the soft variety. Other menu items include Tortas, La Super Gorda, Sopes, Enchiladas, Burritos, Chimichangas, Quesadillas, Huarache, and Fajitas, as well as several other items.

Not finding his favorite Enchiladas Supreme on the menu, Wayne decided to go with the Steak Chimichanga ($6.99). This is a flour tortilla stuffed with steak, sauteed with onion, bell pepper, and tomato, then fried, topped with cheese, and served with rice and beans. The chimichanga was quite large and Wayne said the steak was very tender and he enjoyed it, although he was absolutely stuffed!

I ordered the Chicken Flautas ($6.29) and can tell you, from my point of view, these were the best Flautas I have ever eaten in a restaurant. They were crisp on the outside, while the chicken was moist and there was a slight hint of a sweet taste. I would definitely order them again. The flautas were topped with lettuce, cheese, sour cream, a slice of avocado with a side of the house-made Mexican broth. The broth appeared that it might have tomato in it, but I’m not certain. However, I will say that I thought it was very good.

El Molcajete Sinaloense also has a children’s menu (and it’s not just chicken fingers), served with a choice of fries or rice and beans, priced at $3.99 and $4.99. There are also several desserts if you still have room!

Hours for El Molcajete Sinaloense are Monday through Thursday from 11:00 AM until 9:00 PM, Friday and Saturday until 10:00 PM, and Sunday from 12:00 PM until 9:00 PM. We think they are worth a visit and would definitely go back.

READER PET PEEVE OF THE WEEK:
“It drives me crazy when I am told by a server that it is possible to change an item of food for a different item of food, and then they bring me the food the standard way. I then have to either accept what they brought to me or ask the server again. Usually the server will look at my plate of food, evidently for the first time, and agree that I did not get what I ordered. I once ordered fried shrimp and two veggies and was brought fried okra instead of fried shrimp! Why can't the servers check your plate before they bring it to you?”

We look forward to receiving your comments and pet peeves. cdojanet@chattanoogadineout.com
