Bluff View Art District Officials Say Changing Address Would Be Too Burdensome

  • Tuesday, April 19, 2011

Bluff View Art District officials told the City Council on Tuesday night that changing their address would be an expensive and burdensome headache.

Chris Anderson and Angela Niemeyer said when the change was approved by the City Council two years ago they received no notice.

They said they only learned late last year that 911 had sought to change the 400 block of E. 2nd Street at the Art District to Bluff View Street.

Mr. Anderson said that would make it even more difficult for visitors to find the Art District and bring "a massive cost" related to the address change on promotional material and other items.

Ms. Niemeyer said the city acknowledges that through "an administrative oversight" the Art District officials were not notified at the time of the change.

Mr. Anderson recommended that the Art District keep the E. 2nd Street address and that a section of the street from Market Street to Lookout Street be renamed Aquarium Way. He said there are no businesses in that stretch.

E. 2nd Street at one time went through to Bluff View, but it no longer does. The Art District is reached by High Street off of Third Street.

Councilwoman Sally Robinson said the owners of the Bluff View Art District achieved "an amazing creation" that brings "a huge amount of taxes" to the city.

She said, "I would like to revisit this issue."

The council's legal and legislative committee will take up the issue next Tuesday afternoon.
