Moyers, James "Jim Jack" Edwin (Collegedale)

  • Friday, September 4, 2015

James (Jim, Jack) Edwin Moyers, 91, of Collegedale, Tennessee, died peacefully at home on Thursday, August 27, 2015.

He was born June 6, 1924 in New Orleans, LA and moved to Graysville, TN with his mother and three siblings at the age of 3. His family frequently heard stories about his growing up in the small town of Graysville, swimming in the swimming hole and roaming around town with his beloved dog, Tippy.

He enlisted in the Navy at the age of 17 and served on the USS Preble in the South Pacific during World War II.

He married Helen Pierce in North Carolina in 1947 and they started married life in Collegedale, TN, attending Southern Missionary College. The arrival of their oldest son brought their schooling to a halt and they moved several times, adding 3 more children to their family during the next 18 years. In 1967 the family moved back to Collegedale for their eldest son to attend college. He changed professions several times and never missed an opportunity to learn more about his chosen profession or another one he was interested in pursuing. He worked primarily as a printer and an electrician and retired from McKee Baking Company as an electrician in 1984. He held several jobs after that time and frequently told his family he always enjoyed work. It certainly seemed to be true as he worked until he was nearly 80.

He was preceded in death by his mother, Laura Sullivan Moyers; his siblings, J.C. Moyers, Bill Moyers and Marie Lewis; and his grandson, Shane Gentry.

He is survived by his children, Jim (Peggy) Moyers of Oakland, CA, Rhonda Moyers Russell and Jeanine (Eddie) Warren of Collegedale, TN and Steve Moyers of Bainbridge, GA; his grandchildren, Daisy (Shannon) Tucker, Erin Gentry, Clay (Shelly) Warren, Heather (Jonathan) Hendrix and Brooke (Drew) Parker; and numerous great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Plans for a memorial service will be announced at a later time.

You are invited to share a personal memory or your condolences with the family at his online memorial located at www.companionfunerals.com.  Companion Funeral Home has charge of the arrangements.
