Four Baylor students have received a total of 10 regional Scholastic Art and Writing Awards, presented by the Alliance for Young Artists and Writers.

Senior Katy Smith was awarded three Gold Keys and two Honorable Mentions for her photography, junior Eric Wu received two Gold Keys and a Silver Key for his paintings, junior Connie Hui was awarded a Silver Key for her painting, and freshman Theo Maedgen received an Honorable Mention for his photography. The submissions were organized by Baylor’s Digital Media and Community Developer Ilana Habib.

Since 1923, the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards have recognized the vision, ingenuity, and talent of the nation’s youth, and provided opportunities for creative teens to be celebrated. Through the awards, students receive opportunities for recognition, exhibition, publication, and scholarships. Students across America submitted nearly 320,000 original works during the 2016 program year across 29 different categories of art and writing. Submissions are blindly adjudicated by some of the foremost leaders in the visual and literary arts. Gold Key works will advance to be judged nationally by an impressive panel of creative–industry experts to receive National Medals and be recognized at the National Ceremony at Carnegie Hall in New York City.

Since its founding, the Awards have established a track record for identifying the early promise of our nation’s most accomplished and prolific creative leaders. Alumni include artists Andy Warhol, Philip Pearlstein, Cy Twombly, Robert Indiana, Kay WalkingStick, and John Baldessari; writers Sylvia Plath, Truman Capote, Bernard Malamud, Myla Goldberg, and Joyce Carol Oates; photographer Richard Avedon; actors Frances Farmer, Robert Redford, Alan Arkin, Lena Dunham, and John Lithgow; fashion designer Zac Posen; and filmmakers Stan Brakhage, Ken Burns, and Richard Linklater.
