Hazel Adams
Hazel Jones Adams, affectionately known as “Aunt Hazel”, 102, passed away on December 27, 2020, in Chattanooga.
Mrs. Adams was born on Feb. 23, 1918 in Kensington, Ga. to the late Ivory and Lillian Jones, Sr. She was educated in the Historical Pleasant Grove School in Kensington, Ga. and the Chattanooga Public School System.
Hazel was baptized at an early age at the Pleasant Grove Baptist Church in Kensington, Ga. and was actively involved in church where she participated in the Baptist Training Union and Sunshine Band.
Her faith never wavered. Upon returning from Ohio, she joined Union Hill Missionary Baptist Church. She was a dedicated member attending all services of the church even until her health failed her. She was still driving to church until age 95. She was the oldest member of Union Hill, a member of the Someone to Care Ministry and faithfully attended Sunday School.
She moved to Ohio and in 1966 she returned to Chattanooga and was employed at the Orange Grove Center. She retired after 23 years of service.
After retirement, she volunteered with Meals on Wheels and Foster Grandparent Program and provided nurturing to area daycare children. She was the oldest participant and actively involved with the Avondale Center Senior Program where she enjoyed pottery, bingo, monthly lunch outings and other activities.
Aunt Hazel, as she is affectionately called by her many nieces and nephews, loved flowers and received the Avondale Neighborhood Beautification Award for her yard. She worked in her yard until age 102.
She was independent and lived alone until August 2020. She read the newspaper and kept her mind sharp by working crossword puzzles daily.
The oldest of nine children, she was one of seven sisters and was very close her entire life. Daily conversations with her sisters and brother started the day and ended her night right up to the age of 102.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Lillian and Ivory Jones, Sr.; and siblings, Lorena Burse, Forrest Wilson, Harling Jones, Sr. , Myrtle Horton.
She leaves to cherish her memories three sisters, Mamie Mathis, Roberta Dews, both of Chickamauga, Ga., and Mary Lizzy Clemons, Reminderville, Oh.; one brother, Ivory (Mildred) Jones, Jr., Lylerly, Ga.; several nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, cousins and other relatives; and many other relatives and friends.
