UTC's Boyd Earns All-Conference After Day One of SoCon Indoor Meet

  • Saturday, February 24, 2024

Chattanooga’s Lesley Boyd earned all-conference honors Saturday on Day One of the Southern Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships at the VMI Corp Physical Training Facility. The Mocs are sitting in seventh with several events left for Sunday.

Boyd finished second in the women’s 3000 meter run with a time of 9:34.17, behind Furman’s Abigail Robertson. Leah Boyd finished fifth in the race, setting a personal record with a time of 10:11.85. Andrea Ellis scored for the Mocs in the event with an eighth place finish in a time of 10:51.60 and Michaela Dabney earned All-Freshman Team honors as one of the top three freshman in the race.

“Putting four in the Top 10 was great,” Mocs head coach Andy Meyer said.

“It was a very strategic race as conference championships are. The race was very show for the first 800 meters. Lesley went to the front and modestly lifted the pace reducing the lead pack to five.”

She moved the pace up a bit again after the first 1,000 meters reducing the lead pack to three.

“Each lap got faster and with 400 to go, it was just two and going into the last 200 Lesley was second and cruised in,” Meyer said.

Leah Boyd left her pack with 400 to go claiming fifth place.

“Andrea and Michaela got into a strong rhythm and placed well,” Meyer said.

Ava McGue set a PR in both the long jump and high jump and earned all-freshman team honors in the latter event.

“The first day of the conference meet got off to a great start with Ava getting a PR in the long jump,” Meyer said. “Having a very productive day, she set another PR in the high jump.”

The Mocs finished fourth in the Distance Medley Relay in a time of 12:12.68. Kathryn Vradenburgh started off the race with the 1200 meter run putting the Mocs in third. Sarah Unterholzner took up the baton for the 400 meter distance and handed off to Lexi Foley for the 800 meter. Maddie Wheatcroft ran the 1600 meter anchor leg.

Sarah Unterholzner and Hannah Dearing each set a PR in the 400 meter and Lexi Foley just missed qualifying for Sunday’s final in the 800 meter run with a time of 2:20.49.

“Good day overall,” Meyer said “We are looking forward to the mile; 5k and 4x4. If we run smart, we have the chance to score several more points tomorrow.”
