Phyllis Annette Mays Faulkner
Phyllis Annette Mays Faulkner, 93, of Chattanooga, Tennessee, went to be with her Lord and Savior on April 20, 2024.
Phyllis was born in Jellico, Tn., on Sept. 24, 1930, to the late John Houston Mays and Margaret Newman Mays. She grew up in Jellico and graduated from Jellico High School.
She and husband of 56 years, Joseph Paul Faulkner, married on Nov. 2, 1948. She sang in the choir and taught Sunday School as an active and faithful member of First Baptist Church of Jellico. Phyllis worked at the local telephone company, was co-owner of the F & H Super Market, and took pride in being the first woman to serve on the Campbell County Election Commission.
In 1976, she and Joe moved to Chattanooga, where she worked for the State of Tennessee as their telephone operator. Both Phyllis and Joe became active and faithful members of Brainerd Hills Baptist Church where she sang in the choir and loved and cared for the ladies in her Faith Sunday School class.
Phyllis was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph Paul Faulkner, her daughter, Madeline Jo Ellis, and her brother, John Houston Mays, Jr.
She is survived by her daughter, Margaret Faulkner Long (Ron) of Ooltewah; grandchildren, Kimberly L. Baucom (Brad), William R. Long, Jr. (Mandy), Tamara Jo Ellis, Justin Joe Ellis (Mara). Great-grandchildren, Jocelyn Baucom, Brady Long, Jack Long, Cameron Baucom, Harper Reeves, Maddie Ellis, and Shep Ellis, along with many other family and friends.
Phyllis lived to love everyone she knew and loved her family even more. Mumzie, as we all affectionately called her, was greatly loved by us all. She will always be remembered for her love for the Lord, her joyful disposition, and her infectious laugh.
Visitation will be on Tuesday, April 23, at Brainerd Hills Baptist Church, 6611 East Brainerd Road, Chattanooga, from 11 a.m.-12:30 p.m., with a celebration of life service to follow at 12:30 p.m. with Dr. John Barber and Rev. Mark Smith officiating. Burial will follow at Westview Cemetery with Justin Ellis, Bill Long, Brady Long, Jack Long, Brad Baucom, and Andrew Mays serving as pallbearers.
The family wishes to express their appreciation to The Lantern of Collegedale, Life Care of Collegedale, Hearth Hospice, and everyone who provided care and support to Phyllis and her family.
