Two local vintage base ball teams will battle it out on the field Saturday to see who is the victor in this year’s 6th Cavalry Cup. Mountain City of Chattanooga plays Lightfoot Club of Chattanooga at 2:30 p.m. on the polo field at 6 Barnhardt Cir. in Fort Oglethorpe, rain or shine.
Both teams have been a part of the Tennessee Association of Vintage Base Ball since 2016. There are seven other teams in the league and they play other vintage base ball matches throughout Tennessee and travel to other states for tournaments.
Competition for the 6th Cavalry Cup Championship began in 2016. The pennant has passed back and forth between both clubs over the years, It’s anyone’s guess this year. To date Lightfoot of Chattanooga has three wins and no losses while Mountain City of Chattanooga currently stands at two wins and one loss.
Vintage base ball observes the rules and customs of the 1860s. Base ball was a gentleman's game back then. There was “no spittin', no swearin' and no gloves.” Additionally, players (ballists) wear period uniforms and use period appropriate equipment (i.e. wooden base ball bats known as sticks).
