The soon-to-open The Lantern at Morning Pointe Alzheimer’s Center of Excellence, East Hamilton, is preparing to not only provide clinical and care support for residents living with dementia, but also to provide meaningful, structured and individualized activities to enrich these seniors’ lives.

The new all-memory care community in development at 1775 Generations Way (9700 Block E. Brainerd Road), will include two distinct levels of memory care, expanding the model of care on campus. These are Lamplight—a large area for residents with early-stage Alzheimer’s and dementia who are more active, and Lantern, a more intimate and quiet space designed for more advanced stages.

Life enrichment activities will be planned to meet residents at their unique cognitive levels, with more active engagement for residents who can benefit from greater levels of mental stimulation.

Officials said, "As a resident’s disease progresses, transitioning to the Lantern neighborhood brings an adjusted level of engagement.
Here, the activities are designed more for comfort, a sense of safety and gentle community while steering away from overstimulation or agitation.

"Common to both the Lamplight and Lantern neighborhoods is the emphasis on providing residents with a sense of meaning and purpose."

The community will use Morning Pointe Senior Living’s Meaningful Day program, a personalized approach to memory care that focuses on each resident’s past experiences, interests and abilities. "Associates intentionally create engaging activities that feel natural and familiar, which adds to a feeling of safety and security for residents," officials said.

“Morning Pointe’s mission is to help seniors live their best life, and that includes the emotional and social components of care,” said Greg A. Vital, Morning Pointe Senior Living co-founder and president. “Providing our memory care residents with ways to connect with others and activities that are personally meaningful to them brings out a very human a sense of purpose and of joy. We have seen time and again how having this sense of safety, companionship, and fun in our memory care communities can help our residents thrive and experience brighter moments—even as their disease progresses.”

"The Lantern at Morning Pointe Alzheimer’s Center of Excellence, East Hamilton will use several other approaches and programs that have been shown effective with the Alzheimer’s and dementia population," officials said. "These include the Best Friends Approach, Teepa Snow’s Positive Approach to Care, music therapy, art therapy and cuddle therapy. Care staff will be specially trained in dementia and Alzheimer’s.
