Larry Eugene Pope, design engineer and lifelong resident of Chattanooga, died at his home of cancer on Sunday, March 13, 2005. He was 71.
He attended Lookout Junior High School and Kirkman Technical School, where he graduated. He assisted with the annual Lookout Junior High reunion and was a member of the St. Elmo United Methodist Church.
In 1953 he was drafted into the U.S. Army where he ranked Sgt. First Class in the Third Infantry in the Korean War.
Among some of the companies he was employed with were Astec Industries, Herman Grant Company, Olan Conductors, Olan Chemica, Dupont, United Engineers and Lesco in Dalton, Ga. He designed and assisted in erecting the first asphalt plant in Osaka, Japan.
He was an avid softball player with many leagues in the Chattanooga area, playing first base and pitching. Music was his hobby. He was an excellent guitar player and singer. His music and voice will be missed by many.
He was preceded in death by his father, Reginald (Bill) Pope, mother and stepfather, Dorothy Pope Nelms and Roy Nelms, and his sister, Judy Pope Harris.
He is survived by his wife of 30 years, Frankie Wilson Pope; the family of Marguerite Wilson of Soddy-Daisy, whom he loved and they loved him; two cousins he considered his brothers, James Condra, Tullahoma and David Condra, Chattanooga; niece, Joanna Griffith, and great-nephew, Alexander Griffith of Chattanooga.
Visitation will be Tuesday from 5 to 8 p.m. at Wann Funeral Home. Graveside services will be Wednesday at 2 p.m. at Forest Hills Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Bruce Phillips, Jackie R. Wilson, Jack Layne, Chris Cain, Jim Johnston and Tim Huston.
Honorary pallbearers will be Jimmy Huffine of Gallatin, Charlie Webb of Tallahassee, Morris Simpson, Pat Frost, Jim Frost of Chattanooga and Gerald Kelley, of Cleveland.
Ronald Huston will deliver the eulogy.
