Madeline Cleghon

Madeline Hope Spitzer Cleghon, 94, of Signal Mountain, died peacefully in a local care facility on
January 23, 2009 after a brief illness.

Madeline was born in Marlinton, W.V., the eldest daughter of seven children born to H.P. “Pete” and Gertrude Johnson Spitzer. Although she was happily a resident of the Chattanooga area for most of her life, she always considered Marlinton “home.”

Madeline and her late husband, Tom were longtime members of Signal Crest United Methodist Church. At
Signal Crest she was an active member of the United Methodist Women for many years.

During her life, she and Tom were fortunate to have been able to travel extensively to Europe and the Far East. Madeline loved life, and her greatest love was her family. She took advantage of every opportunity to spend time with them. She always looked forward to any type of family event, no matter how large or small. For many years she and her three sisters would meet annually for a “sister reunion.”

Madeline was preceded in death by her loving husband of 67 years, Thomas G. Cleghon Sr.; brothers, Leroy E. Spitzer, David Spitzer and Harry L. Spitzer; and sisters, Mary Margaret Hoover and Helen Faye Simpson. She is survived by her son, Thomas G. Cleghon Jr. and wife Lorraine; granddaughter, Mary Katherine
Cleghon, all of Chattanooga; grandson, Jonathan M. Cleghon, wife Stacey and great-granddaughter, Katherine Hope, all of Nashville; her dear sister, Doris Jean Hiner-Mitchell; and many nieces and nephews.

Madeline was a wonderful mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and aunt. She was known to her family by her nickname “Enie” and her spirit will be greatly missed by all.

The family would like to thank the staff of Alexian Village, Alexian Inn and Alexian Health Care for their kind
and loving service over the last ten years.

A private service for the family will be held on Saturday at Signal Crest United Methodist Church.

A memorial service will be held and burial of ashes will be at a later date in Marlinton, W.V.

Arrangements are by the North Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home, Crematory and Florist.
