Parkridge Health System has received the first residents for its new postgraduate year one (PGY1) pharmacy residency program. The residency program incorporates many aspects of clinical pharmacy practice through a range of practical learning experiences. Residents perform clinical rotations throughout the system, are required to complete a research project, perform medication use evaluations, deliver formal presentations and participate in distribution services.

A PGY1 program builds on a Doctor of Pharmacy education and outcomes to contribute to the development of clinical pharmacists responsible for medication related care of patients with a wide range of conditions.  Upon completion of the PGY1 program, residents will be eligible for board certification and for post graduate year two (PGY2) pharmacy residency, which builds upon the competencies established in PGY1.

During the resident’s time with the Parkridge Health System, they are mentored by experienced and dedicated preceptors who are committed to patient care and the training of new practitioners. Residents will interact with many physicians, nurses, therapists, and other health care professionals in the course of their patient care activities or participate on multidisciplinary care teams or projects.

Core rotations for PGY1 residents include:  Internal medicine, critical care, informatics, cardiology, and antimicrobial stewardship.  Other rotations include:  Neonatology at Parkridge East Hospital, psychiatry pharmacy at both Parkridge Valley facilities and Institutional Pharmacy Management.

“We are excited to offer this program and contribute to the clinical development of future pharmacists,” said Kenny Dyer, Pharm.D.BCPS, Residency Program director, Parkridge Medical Center.  “There are currently 19 facilities or systems within HCA offering this program, including our corporate office in Nashville.  The diversity and the number of patients in the Parkridge Health System and the expertise of the staff allows for the residents to receive a higher level of training over a variety of patient care settings.”
