In 2014, Tennessee Tech University iCube in partnership with the TN Child Passenger Safety Center developed the Tennessee Child Passenger Safety Resource Tool with funding from the TN Highway Safety Office. This app is free and available for iPhone and Android users.
The app focuses on best practice recommendations for child passenger safety as presented by the American Academy of Pediatrics, National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, Safe Kids and other expert resources.
The CPS app helps determine the best way to transport children safely and educate users on the Tennessee Law requirements for child passenger safety.
The child passenger safety app is divided into four sections- Car Seat Checker, Types of Child Restraints, Tennessee CPS Fitting Stations Map, and Videos.
The Car Seat Checker section allows the user to type in the birth date, weight, and height of the child. This followed by recommendations for the best type of car seat or booster seat for this child.
The Types of Car Seats section explains the types of car seats available: rear facing, forward facing, booster seats and when to graduate to the vehicle’s seat belt system.
The TN CPS Fitting Stations Map helps the user to find a local certified child passenger safety technician to assist with the correct selection and installation of car seats and booster seats.
The Video section connects the user to installation videos (approved by car seat manufacturers) to assist with the correct way to install the car seat, either using the vehicle lap and shoulder belt system or using the LATCH (Lower Anchors and Tethers for CHildren) system.
Also, included in the app, are car seat recalls and frequently asked questions.
