Susan Elder Martin died on November 20, 2022, in her home on Elder Mountain at the age of 87.

She was born on Dec. 1,1934, to Alice Dalton Elder and Oliver Garrison Elder in Chattanooga, Tn.

Susan was educated at Girls Preparatory School and graduated from Chatham Hall School in Chatham, Va. She attended Sweet Briar College.

After meeting on a blind date she happily married John (Jack) McEwen Martin of Chattanooga where they raised their family.

Susan was an avid community volunteer. She served on the board of The Chattanooga Nature Center and Girls Preparatory School. She was a past president of the Junior League and was a founding member of Hospice, as well as a volunteer there.

She served on the vestry and was a life long member of The Church of the Good Shepherd .

Susan had a great love of nature, music, and literature. She was beautiful inside and out. She vigorously loved and encouraged her children and grandchildren to love nature, to read good books and fight for the underdog.

Susan was predeceased by her parents, her husband Jack, and her son Cliff.

She is survived by her brothers, George Elder (Martha), Philip Elder (Becky); her children, John (Elizabeth), Alice (Everett Cramer), Garrison (Carol); daughter-in-law Karen Martin, 10 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Susan’s family wants to thank the caregivers from Prestige Home Care who took loving care of her over the last month, as well as Hospice of Chattanooga West team.

Services will be held at Church of the Good Shepherd on Lookout Mountain on Thursday, Dec. 1, at 11 a.m.

In lieu of flowers, Susan’s family requests that donations be made in her memory to Chattanooga Nature Center, Hospice Chattanooga Team West, or to The Church of the Good Shepherd.
