The Hurricanes of East Hamilton picked up notable wins in a sweep over the Chattanooga Christian Chargers in Tuesday night prep sports action.

The Lady Hurricanes came from behind to steal a win from the Lady Chargers in the final moments, 72-65. As for the boys, East Hamilton scores the first points of the game and holds the lead for the entirety of four quarters, as they cruise to a 77-59 win.

A positive takeaway for the Lady Chargers was that they found their star early in the contest with 8th grade point guard Aubriyana Camp. From the jump ball, Camp was the facilitator and go-to scorer for CCS.

Whether it be from two steps behind the arc or falling down under the basket, Camp was making all of her shots. Pair that with a handful of steals and you have got yourself a headache for opponents. It was for the Lady Hurricanes of East Hamilton throughout the first half, where they never saw the lead.

However, a strong final 10 minutes of play by the Lady Hurricanes saw the Lady Charger lead shrink. The first lead change of the night came in the final seconds of the third quarter with East Hamilton’s Christal Collins game-tying floater and Nita Rose’s steal and layup before the buzzer to give the Lady Hurricanes 48-46 lead.

In the fourth quarter, the East Hamilton lead grew steadily behind the performance of Noah Woodruff. Woodruff, CCS’s headache, grabbed multiple boards on defense and offense, mounting multiple second-chance points, and totaled 19 points.

After climbing up to a nine point lead, the Lady Chargers switched defensive schemes to a half court trap that would help them trim the Lady Hurricanes lead. After forcing three straight turnovers and capitalizing on them, CCS would tie it up, 60-60, following a steal by Camp and a free throw by Charger teammate LaiLani Hatten. A steal on the next possession ended with Camp being fouled on the layup. She would hit one free throw to give the Lady Chargers the 61-60 lead with two minutes to play.

One more late surge by the Lady Hurricanes, though, stunned CCS. With added intensity on defense and on the glass, East Hamilton would take the lead and momentum from the Lady Chargers’ grasp. With 30 seconds remaining, Woodruff put the icing on the cake by breaking a CCS’s players’ ankles and take the ball to the rack for two points. The Lady Hurricanes would walk out with the win, outlasting the Lady Chargers.

East Hamilton boys 77, CCC 59: As for the boys, East Hamilton came out on fire. An 18-3 lead five minutes into the first quarter left a bleak outlook for CCS. But early foul trouble and an 11-point run by the Chargers to close out the first quarter kept things interesting heading into the second quarter.

The three pointer was cooking early for the Hurricanes as six of them rained down from deep in the first half. As for the Chargers, point guard Dre Jackson nearly single-handedly willed CCS back into the game by dropping six points in the first quarter. But East Hamilton began to lock him down in the second, holding him only two points off of free throws.

New additions from the football team, Zachariah Laboo and Juandrick Bullard, played enormous roles in the starting lineup, and ultimately came up big for the Hurricanes. Whenever the duo, center and forward, was on the court East Hamilton would pull away quickly.

“They have brought a ton of leadership and experience, and they have brought a different type of physicality,” said East Hamilton head coach Andrew Webb. “Those guys have started for two years. The physicality, esteem is different. Juan Bullard and Zach Laboo are two selfless individuals and those are the guys that make winning plays.”

Indeed they did, as their return in the second half (out of foul trouble, specifically Laboo) gave East Hamilton an enormous advantage. Bullard would hit shots from range as Laboo, the tall and bulky center, dominated the paint both ways.

The Hurricanes would start quick again and pull away steadily throughout the second half. Couple that duo with the athletic point guard Ashton Munson and the perimeter players at East Hamilton, then it becomes a pick your poison predicament.

At the end of the third quarter, the Hurricanes climbed to a 61-47 lead. The energy on the Charger bench was gone. The Hurricanes wore them out. In the end, East Hamilton would climb up to 6-1 and hand CCS their second loss of the season.
