Tennova Healthcare – Cleveland Celebrates DAISY Award Milestone

  • Thursday, August 17, 2023
Tennova Healthcare – Cleveland recently honored 6 DAISY Award Winners.

The DAISY Award came to be as part of one family’s gratitude for the care they received during a difficult illness and loss of a loved one. That gratitude turned into honor for their loved one, Patrick Barnes, along with a plan to thank nurses for their dedication to patients.

Officials said, "At age thirty-three, Patrick Barnes battled an autoimmune disease called Immune Thrombocytopenia. After Patrick succumbed to his illness in 1999, the family began to discuss a way to continue to honor Patrick.
The family kept coming back to the impact the staff had on them as well as Patrick himself.

"While we use words every day, there are times words don’t say enough or express enough. When you add those words with a kind act, a smile and acknowledgement you have forever changed someone’s life at a time that they are most vulnerable. Healthcare is much more than words or diagnosing an illness or administering medicine. It is about compassion and reassuring the patient and their family that you are not alone. We will walk beside you in your journey.

"The DAISY Foundation provides a structured program to foster ongoing recognition of exceptional nurses and is a platform that help others have the ability to recognize those nurses who go above and beyond their role.

"Earlier this year, we were privileged to meet Bonnie Barnes, co-founder of the DAISY Foundation, who mentioned the best practice of providing more than one DAISY Award recognition per month. We are excited to be a best practice as we honored six nurses/leaders in July."

"With an increase in nominations from our community, we are so grateful for the ability to honor six of our nurses as DAISY Award recipients,” states Kim Reddish, chief nursing officer. “Our mission at Tennova Healthcare – Cleveland is to define excellence and give hope from our family to yours. I know how compassionate our nurses are here at Tennova, but it means so much more to have the community recognize it. We call our nurses 'difference makers' and we focus as a team to make a difference in each of our patient’s lives."

Andrea Champion, RN is over the nomination’s committee at Tennova Healthcare - Cleveland and has been instrumental in organizing the DAISY Award Program.

"While this is the first time we have had some many nominations announced, I hope to see many more of our difference makers nominated. Each of the nurses recognized go above and beyond to ensure you have the most compassionate care," Ms. Champion said. "As I round on our teams, I continue to be inspired by our group of nurses and our healthcare team here at Tennova."

Each winner receives a DAISY portfolio with certificate, a hand carved statue from Zimbabwe titled Healer’s
Touch Award, a pin, copy of their nomination and cinnamon rolls (the one food that Patrick was able to enjoy).

The most recent winners include: Ron Roberts, RN, director of Clinical Informatics; Tim Steve, RN, Med Surge Unit;
Courtney Fluharty, RN, director of Emergency Services; Cassie Adams, RN, Dialysis supervisor; Bri Foley Odom, RN, 2S Orthopedics; and Beth Wineland, RN, Labor and Delivery.
