Beloved Teacher In Chattanooga Had A Deep Passion For Sports

William L. Copeland, 88, peacefully departed this world on September 16, 2023, in a local Chattanooga hospital.

He was born on May 9, 1935, in Chattanooga, to the proud parents Joseph M. Copeland and Cora Mae Freeman Copeland. William's educational journey saw him graduate from Howard High School in 1956, after which he continued his studies at Tennessee State University, earning his degree in 1961.

Devoting his life to the education of others, William became a beloved figure within the Chattanooga public school system. His career came full circle as he returned to his alma mater, Howard High School, where he imparted knowledge and wisdom to countless students from 1962 to 1994.

William had a deep passion for sports, frequently enjoying televised baseball, football, basketball, and boxing. He cherished his trips to Tennessee State University's homecoming football games and held the Atlanta Braves close to his heart as his favorite baseball team.

In matters of faith, William was a dedicated member of Greater Second Missionary Baptist Church, where he shared his gift for teaching and writing in Sunday school lessons.

William was preceded in death by his parents, as well as his sister, Ada Mae Copeland Davis, and brother, Charles McKinley Copeland.

He is survived by his sister, Mollie Wilkerson of Chattanooga; nephew, Wesley (Geraline) Davis; niece, Deborah (George) Howard of Nashville, TN; nephews, Lawrence (Elaine) Wilkerson of Mesa, AZ, Jeffrey (Kimberly) Wilkerson of Chattanooga, and Elijah (Rose) Wilkerson of Chattanooga; and niece, Avis Wilkerson Smith of Chattanooga.

A public viewing to honor and remember William's life will take place from 2-6 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 29, at Greater Second Missionary Baptist Church.

A 1:30 p.m. funeral service will be held on Saturday, Sept. 30, at the Greater Second Missionary Baptist Church, 810 Shallowford Road.

Interment will take place at Highland Memorial Gardens.
