UTC students in the Department of Communication will organize a concert as part of their A Mocs First Year (AMFY) class. Cherry Street Tavern partnered with the students to host the show. Sunny War headlines the event. I Before E, a pop punk band fronted by a student in the class, plans to open. Everything takes place at Cherry Street on November 13 at 6 p.m.
Ms. War also lives in Chattanooga. She relocated from a California punk scene, but these days her eclectic clawhammer guitar technique combines that love of punk with folksy, acoustic style. Her work resonates with a range of audiences. Willie Nelson will even sing one of her pieces on his upcoming album of cover songs.
UTC designed the AMFY program to help incoming first-year students form bonds by exploring and engaging with the campus and surrounding communities. Dr. Chandler Harriss designed this version of AMFY for the Department of Communication.
“For me, the most important part of this class involved having fun. I wanted to combine that with an introduction to certain aspects of the Communication Department’s flexible major,” Dr. Harriss says.
UTC freshman Aiden Turner adds, “This is the first year that UTC has done the A Mocs First Year program, and it has been a lot of fun getting to work together to plan this event.”
Purchase tickets for the show online through a link on Cherry Street Tavern’s Instagram site. Or, purchase them at the door on the day of the event. Tickets cost $10 in advance and $12 on the day of the show.
Dr. Delight Yokely leads the AMFY program, for which professors from a range of majors designed classes. The class that Dr. Harriss designed is specific to the UTC Department of Communication.
