Donald Morton
Donald L. Morton, former executive director of the Tennessee legislature’s Fiscal Review Committee, passed away December 2, 2024. He was 89.
Don was preceded in death by his parents, Sherman Joseph Morton and Edna Springfield Morton, and brother, James Austin Morton.
Don is survived by his brother, Dr. Jack Morton and nieces, Carolyn Morton Jirlds of Houston, Texas, Karen Morton Smith (Stanton) of Soddy Daisy, Marnie Morton Kuhns (Dave) of Ringgold, Karen Collins (Glenn) of Ringgold, Lisa Kline (Chris) of Soddy Daisy, and nephew Thad Morton (Gina) of Greenville, S.C., and several great nieces and nephews and cousins.
Don was a graduate of Soddy Daisy High school and Middle Tennessee State College where he earned a degree in Business. Upon graduation Don proudly served in the U.S Army in Korea during the Korean Conflict. After his service he became a Certified Public Accountant. He spent his entire professional career working for the state of Tennessee, first as an internal auditor for the Department of Revenue. He then headed the state audit division in the comptroller’s office and in 1969 was named executive director of the legislature’s Fiscal Review Committee and served until his retirement. He also taught business law classes at several law schools. Don studied the stock market and traded into the last weeks of his life. It was his passion.

Visitation will be held at Woodbine Funeral Home – Hickory Chapel, Nashville, on Monday, Dec. 9, from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. with the service to follow visitation. Interment will be held on Jan. 13, 2025, at 1 at the Chattanooga National Cemetery.
