Bessie Smith Cultural Center Announces Lineup Of Events For Black History Month

The Bessie Smith Cultural Center announces its 2025 Black History Month programming. 

"This year’s events highlight the contributions, culture and legacy of the African American community with a series of dynamic, educational and engaging activities for all ages," organizers said.

Community Events Schedule:

Feb. 1: Art Contest Exhibit Opening / Community Day
Kick off Black History Month with free museum admission and the opening of the Black History Month Art Contest Exhibit.
This event provides an opportunity to explore the creativity and talent of young local artists while celebrating the cultural heritage of the African American community.

Feb. 6: TVFCU First Thursday - Free Admission
Thanks to partners at TVFCU, enjoy free museum admission all day on the first Thursday of February. Come and experience our exhibits while learning more about the rich history of African Americans in Chattanooga and beyond.

Feb. 6: Unity, Scholarship, Service: The Legacy of Black Greek Life
Celebrate the National Pan-Hellenic Council's history, legacy and cultural impact. This special event fosters community connection and honors the traditions of black Greek organizations that have been instrumental in shaping African American leadership and service.

Feb. 13: Screening: The Six Triple Eight
A screening of The Six Triple Eight, a Netflix film about the 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion—the first and only all-black, all-female unit of the Women’s Army Corps to serve overseas during WWII. This event will include historical insights into the battalion’s connection to Fort Oglethorpe and its extraordinary contributions.

Feb. 22: Breaking Barriers: Black Excellence in Sports
This panel discussion and workshop explore the experiences of black athletes and provides advice on navigating the sports world. Learn from professionals as they share their journeys and insights on breaking barriers in the field.

Feb. 27: Tennessee Songwriters Showcase Semifinals
Don’t miss this qualifying round of the Tennessee Songwriters Showcase. Aspiring songwriters can sign up beginning Jan. 13—spaces are limited, so act fast to secure your spot and showcase your talent.

"The Bessie Smith Cultural Center is proud to partner with the following community partners to make Black History Month events possible: The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga, the City of Chattanooga, Hamilton County Government, TVFCU and Tennessee Arts Commission. Throughout February, the BSCC invites the community to join us in celebrating Black History Month. These events not only honor the achievements of African Americans, but also foster education and unity within our community," officials said.

The national theme for Black History Month 2025 is “African Americans and Labor.”
