Johnnie Williams
Johnnie Inez Coulter Williams, 104, passed away peacefully on March 15, 2025, in Hixson, Tennessee.
She was born in Rock Spring, Ga., and moved to Oak Ridge during World War II. Johnnie was believed to be one of the last living “Calutron Girls” for the Manhattan Project at Oak Ridge. She was a member of the Oak Ridge Alliance Church and the Manhattan Women’s Club. Johnnie made Chattanooga her home in 2016. She was a great Southern cook and enjoyed watching University of Tennessee Volunteer sports. Her keys to a long life were bacon grease and banana pudding.
Johnnie was preceded in death by her husband, James “Lucky” E. Williams; her granddaughter, Lindsey Smith Davis; her parents, John W. and Mary Catherine Williams Coulter; 10 sisters and brothers and five half sisters and brothers.
She is survived by her son, James “Jimmy” D. Williams (Phyllis), of Clarksville, Tn., her daughter, Mary Catherine “Cathy” Smith (Jim) of Hixson, her granddaughter, Brittany Williams (Gary) of Lynchburg, Va., two grandsons, Eric Williams (Rhonda) of Powell, Tn. and Chad Williams.
Johnnie had a large extended family with several nieces and nephews, great grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren
Funeral services will be held at the graveside in Woodstation Cemetery on Saturday, March 22, at 2 p.m. with Pastor Dale Crank officiating. The family will receive friends from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. on Saturday at the North Chapel of Chattanooga Funeral Home.
