CLEVELAND, Tenn.— With a half dozen players shooting in the 30s, Walker Valley had a strong District 5-AA tri match with Rhea County and McMinn County coming to the Flagstone Golf Club Thursday.
Five Mustangs broke 40 for a 3-over-par 147 team tally, downing the Cherokees (159) by a dozen strokes and the Golden Eagles (165) by 18.
Posting their lowest score of the season, the Lady Mustang freshman duo tied with the Tribe for second place with an 87, while the Rhea girls won by just five shots with an 82.
"Another solid showing from the boys," proclaimed veteran Herd wrangler Will Campbell. "Proud of how consistent they played today.
"(Freshman) Cody (Walter) led the way for us with a 35 and medalist honors.
"And the girls shot their best score to date," he added. "Pumped for Callie Kessler with a 38 which is her career best. Excited to see them keep improving."
Walker Valley now awaits an invitation to play against the top Chattanooga area squads in the City Prep on Wednesday. The field will be set this weekend.
Along with Walter's 1-under-par tally, Mustangs junior Harrison Yost and Luke Finnell helped out with 1-over 37s.
Sophomore Drew Thompson rounded out the team total wit a 2-over 38. Malachi Maples shot a 3-over 39 in support, while Knox Finch carded a 42.
Walker Chouinard topped the McMinn effort with a 2-over 38 on the Flagstone front nine, with Braxton Brazzell and Brayden Fowler posted 40s, while Gavin Riggs shot 41.
Eli Everett paced Rhea County with a 1-over 37, followed by Dylan Henderson (39), Eli Mickel (44) and 45s from Zachary Hennessee and Jack Mickel.
Kessler's 2-over paired with classmate Emilynn Brown's 49 for the Lady Mustangs.
Lydia Deal topped the Lady Eagles with a 40, while teammate Alyssa Stinnett shot 42.
McMinn got a 40 from Zoe B and a 47 by Molly T (no last names provided).
