Simon Monen, 85, died Monday, May 27, 2002, in a local hospital. He was a prominent Chattanooga businessman.
Mr. Monen was born in Cincinnati, Ohio, the son of the late Harry and Gertrude Ukelson Monen. A graduate of the University of Louisville with a B.S. degree, he was a star athlete at the University of Louisville in both baseball and basketball.
He was owner of the Athens Outlet Stores and Sterling Dress Shop in Athens, where he spent most of his life in the retail clothing business. He was a captain in the U.S. Army during World War II and was a member of Mizpah Congregation.
His survivors are wife, Priscilla Merenbloom Monen; two sons and daughters-in-law, Dr. David and Judy Monen, and Jeff and Cherie Monen, all of Chattanooga; brother, Robert Monen, Louisville, Ky.; four grandchildren, Dr. Scott Monen, Michael Monen, Lindsey Monen and Ivy Monen, all of Chattanooga.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 1 p.m. in Mizpah Temple with Rabbi Philip Posner officiating.
Burial will be in Mizpah Cemetery.
Active pallbearers are Stuart Bass, Marty Bass, Dr. Michael Merren, Stephen Merren, Michael Monen, Dr. Scott Monen, Lindsey Monen and Ivy Monen.
The body will lie in state at the temple one hour prior to the service.
