McCallie won the boys Division II-AA East Region championship on Wednesday at Bear Trace at Harrison Bay thanks to a pair of 6-under 66s manufactured by seniors Jack Martin and Billy Boroughs. The Blue Tornado recorded a team total of 10-under-par 278 to outdistance runner-up Baylor and its score of 1-over-par 289.
Both schools have been fixtures at the state tournament, McCallie making its 20th appearance while Baylor will be making its 34th trip.
Baylor was led by Harry McGuire and his own round of 66, finishing in a three-way tie with Boroughs and Martin.
Determining a champion required a sudden-death playoff starting on No.1, and all three golfers parred the opening hole. Martin birdied the par-5 second to claim the top honors, while McGuire recorded a par and Boroughs a bogey to finish second and third, respectively.
Other contributors to McCallie’s winning effort were Nate Coffman with an even-par 72 and James Gayle with a 2-over 74. Vidur Rajagopalan had the drop score with a 4-over 76.
Rounding out Baylor’s state-bound squad were Wyatt Manner, who finished fifth overall at 1-under 71, Max Johnson at 3-over 75, and Brooks Englert at 5-over 77. Finishing just outside the team total was Praval Bathi with a 7-over 79.
Qualifying as individuals were Webb School of Knoxville’s Andrew Sandberg, whose 2-under 70 was good for fourth overall along with Chattanooga Christian’s sophomore Brycen Blake, who finished at even-par 72.
The state tournament will take place Oct. 10-11 at Sevierville Golf Club.
The Baylor girls will continue their annual pilgrimage to the state tournament for the 30th straight year – and 34th overall – by capturing their region title in convincing fashion.
The Red Raiders were led by medalist Justine Emond as Baylor claimed the top three spots in individual play. The senior from Canada posted a 1-over-par 73, while junior Carlee Rogers shot 3-over 75 and sophomore Katie Grace Tuder recorded a round of 4-over 76.
With the two low scores counting toward the team total, Baylor shot 148 to finish 16 shots ahead of fellow qualifier Knox Catholic and its combined 164. Teagan Walker finished fourth overall with a 6-over 78 to lead the Fighting Irish.
GPS placed third in the team competition at 167, but a pair of Bruiser golfers earned a spot at the state tournament as individuals. Harper Wakefield, only an 8th grader, shot 6-over 78 to finish fifth overall, while junior Katherine Potts will also advance after carding a 17-over 89 and edging Chattanooga Christian’s Nora Strain with a par on the first playoff hole.
