Tennessee Education Association To Host Awards Luncheon

Tennessee Education Association (TEA) President Earl Wiman will be presenting awards to Tennessee educators and education supporters on Friday at the TEA Annual Awards Luncheon. The luncheon and awards program will be held at 11 a.m. at the TEA headquarters at 801 Second Ave. N. in Nashville.

Tennessee Book Company, a longtime supporter of the Distinguished Educator Awards Program (DEAP), provided gift certificates to all DEAP winners.

The 2009-10 Distinguished Classroom Teachers are Kimberly Carter (Cheatham County), Sylvia Clark (Memphis), Annette Davidson Ray (McMinn County), Judy Walton Stanley (Robertson County) and Vicki Bailey Wells (Marion County).

Trevette Burns (Robertson County) has been named the 2010 Distinguished Education Support Professional.

Distinguished Administrator Awards go to Dr. Charles Green (Memphis), Lois Preece (McMinn County) and Dr. Sharon Roberts (Lebanon). The Distinguished Higher Education Faculty Member Award recipient is Dr. Becky Moore Cox of University of Tennessee at Martin.

TEA also honored Tennessee’s 2010 Teacher of the Year, Patty Kiddy from Selmer Elementary School in McNairy County. Heather Hughes, Hamilton County teacher, was also recognized as TEA’s nominee for the 2009 National Education Association Foundation Award for Teaching Excellence.

The E. Harper Johnson Human Relations Award was presented in the layperson category to Ellen Kimball of McMinn County. In the local association category, the Clarksville-Montgomery Education Association won the award. Sarah Kennedy-Harper of the Memphis Education Association received the Susan B. Anthony Award for her work in support of programs and achievements for women and girls.

President Wiman also announced the winners of the 2010-11 Don Sahli-Kathy Woodall Scholarships. The $1,000 Sons and Daughters Scholarship goes to Sarah Young (Giles County High School). Sarah is the daughter of Cindy Young, Giles County Education Association. The $1,000 Future Teachers of America Scholarship goes to Tammara Jean Garrett (Alvin C. York Agricultural Institute). Adam Loo (Maryville High School) received the Minority Scholarship.

Marlene Wolfe (Tennessee Technological University) and Student TEA (STEA) President Delvin Woodard (Tennessee State University) received $1,000 STEA scholarships. STEA also awarded $500 scholarships to Emily Hevrdeys (East Tennessee State University) and Caryce Gilmore (University of Tennessee at Martin).

President Wiman will present the 2009 School Bell Awards for excellence in media coverage of education and TEA’s Friend of Education Awards at Thursday evening’s Representative Assembly.

Winning a TEA School Bell Award this year for outstanding coverage by an individual reporter are Ann Wallace of The Leaf Chronicle and Melissa Penry of WKRN-TV News Channel 2. WKRN-TV News Channel 2 was selected for outstanding coverage by a television station. The recipient for outstanding Coverage by Weekly and Semi-Weekly Newspapers is The Courier in Savannah, Tenn.

TEA’s 2010 Friend of Education Awards go to Greg Owens of DeKalb County, in the individual category, and to the Light One Candle Outreach of Athens, TN, in the organization category.
